Recipes for winter

Simple soups

Healthy and hearty, a big pot of steaming soup is the perfect winter warmer. Pair with some nice crusty bread to make it a warm winter dinner.

  • Easy red lentil and tomato soup from The Spruce Eats – With just three ingredients (plus seasonings), it doesn’t get simpler than this tasty soup!
    • Space soup from Recipes from a Normal Mum – If you’re looking for ways to get your children to eat their green veg, this recipe from 2011 Great British Bake Off finalist Holly Bell is a winner.

One-pot wonders

There’s nothing like a one-pot meal to simplify your dinner routine. These recipes call for everything to be made in one pot – or nearly – making supper an easy affair.

  • Slow-cooked lamb and sweet potato casserole from A Mummy Too – A one-pot dish that’s full of flavour from award-winning food and lifestyle blogger Emily Leary. Just leave plenty of time for this beauty to slow cook in the oven – you won’t regret it!

Warming roasts and mains

A lovingly prepared roast is sure to gather the family around the table – and these recipes are good enough to make any day of the week.

  • Roast beef dinner from Culinary Ginger – A perfect Sunday roast from Culinary Ginger’s ‘resident redhead’ Jeanette, ready to pair with all the trimmings.
    • Mushroom lentil loaf with cranberries from A Virtual Vegan – This lovely lentil loaf from vegan cookbook author and blogger Melanie McDonald gets heaps of flavour from mushrooms, nuts and the bright pop of cranberries on top.

Five a day

Vegetables don’t have to be boring – or be relegated to the side-lines. These hearty recipes make getting in your children’s five a day easy by giving veg a starring role.

  • Winter veggie stew with wholesome lumpy dumplings from The Happy Foodie – Thick and moreish, this lovely stew from star BBC chef Nick Knowles is topped with cheesy dumplings – a sure winner!
    • One pot split pea curry from The Flexitarian – Mild and hearty, this child-friendly curry from ‘flexible vegetarian’ Annabelle Randles makes a satisfying meal and cooks up in just one pot.

As winter draws on, many children are in need of a warm, safe home. If you’re considering welcoming a foster child into your home, you can learn about becoming a foster carer.
